SAMEWERKING?...

EFF wants SA's name changed

The Economic Freedom Fighters are set on getting rid of the country's colonial past and want to change the name of the country and that of a number of towns in the Western Cape.

"Black South Africans are reminded of the oppression every day by names and statues that cannot be changed or removed. It's like a rape victim that has to look their rapist in the eyes every day," the party's Western Cape chairperson Bernard Joseph was quoted as saying by News24.

Joseph said that the party would pressure the national government to change the name of the country to Azania. He said that this was part of the party's local election strategy for the upcoming municipal elections.

"The party will soon meet with communities and voters to announce election plans. The name changes will also be presented to them. "The EFF believes that changes like these should be an inclusive decision that everyone should participate in," Joseph said.  The EFF's provincial secretary Melikhaeya Xego added that the party would continue the fight to get rid of the country's colonial and Apartheid past, saying that it was unacceptable that there streets in small towns that were still named after Dutch colonialist Jan van Riebeeck or Apartheid era leader PW Botha.

The party also wanted to change the names of a number of Western Cape towns and also wanted to change the names of a few Cape Town suburbs too. The towns included Stellenbosch, Wellington, Worcerster, Oudtshoorn and Somerset-West. The suburbs it wanted renamed were Athlone, Bellville, Durbanville and Milnerton.

The party did not say what it wanted the names changed to. The Western Cape's MEC for culture and sport, Anroux Marais, dismissed the EFF's plan as impractical and unaffordable. "Service delivery will have to be curtailed if the EFF’s plan were to be implemented, because municipalities will have to pay for the name change," Marais said. (Beklemtoning van die AVP)
