Dat FW de Klerk in sy herdenkingstoespraak oor 2 Februarie 1990 se “politieke-pêrel-voor-die-varke” handeling bereid is om te sê: ...”there are some problems, said De Klerk. This includes rampant crime, corruption in high places, a hugely under-performing education system….”

According to Statistics SA, more South Africans are living in poverty than in 2010.

The agency's latest report on poverty found that 21.5 percent of South Africans were living in poverty in 2014, Sapa reported.

This is an increase from 20 percent in 2010. Meanwhile, the cost of food has increased.

The report found that it cost an average South African R355 a month to buy food in 2014, as opposed to the R321 it cost in 2010.

The austere poverty line, which indicates the threshold below which one has to sacrifice food for other basic items such as transportation, has also risen. "This line is revised upwards from R441 to R501, per person per month," statistician general Pali Lehohla said at the report's release. However the agency said that South Africans still have a relatively higher living standard when compared with certain other countries.

In South Africa, the food poverty line translated to $2.34 (R26) per person per day. However, the international line for extreme poverty translated to $1.25 (R14) per person per day. "This means that, on average, South Africans are enjoying relatively higher living standards compared to many populations across the world that live below $1.25 per day," Lehohla said.
