Dit is tog eienaardig hoe sekere gebeure in die politiek, voëls van enerse vere op uiteenlopende wyse bymekaarbring.

Toe die United Democratic Front (UDF) wat tussen die einde van 1977, toe die Soweto- opstand bedaar het, en 20 Augustus 1983, in Kaapstad gestig is, is daar verskeie kere ’n oproep vir ’n verenigde front teen apartheid gedoen. Vroeg in 1983 was daar egter blykbaar meer verdelings as ooit tevore. In 1979 het hoofman Mangosuthu Buthelezi oor sanksies en die gewapende stryd sy bande met die ANC-leiers in ballingskap verbreek. Die South African Black Alliance, waarin Inkatha en die (bruin) Arbeiders party die belangrikste bondgenote was, het ineengestort toe die Arbeiders op 4 Januarie 1984 besluit om aan die nuwe Driekamerparlement deel te neem.

Die ANC-leier, Oliver Tambo, het die Arbeidersparty se besluit gekritiseer en mense aangespoor om ‘‘alle demokratiese magte in een front vir nasionale bevryding te organiseer’’. Ná ’n onderhoud met Mac Maharaj en Joe Slovo oor dié sake het Howard Barrell gesê die skepping van ’n front van dié aard is in die ANC se strategie verslag in 1979 in die vooruitsig gestel. Die gedagte om ’n verenigde demokratiese front te skep, het egter in Suid-Afrika ontstaan, en ‘‘die beroep is sonder enige verwysing na die leiers in ballingskap gedoen’’.

Allan Boesak, ’n predikant van die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Sendingkerk, met ’n vinnig groeiende reputasie as redenaar en aktivis, het die proses aan die gang gesit. Ondersteuners van die Vryheidsmanifes het hom met agterdog bejeën omdat hy bande met die Swartbewussyn-beweging gehad het, maar enkele Manifes-gesindes in die Indiër-gemeenskap het hom genooi om ’n massavergadering van die Transvaalse Anti-South African Indian Council- komitee in Johannesburg toe te spreek. Hier het Boesak verklaar: ‘‘Mense moet vir apartheid nee sê . . . ons het ’n verenigde front nodig om dit te doen.’’ Dit was ’n kort, byna terloopse opmerking, maar met geweldige gevolge. Cas Salojee sê: ‘‘Hy het mense geraak . . . hy het eenvoudig ’n helse sensasie veroorsaak.’’ Die Manifesgesindes het onmiddellik aan die werk gespring. Daar was dus deeglike voorbereiding toe Boesak by die amptelike bekendstelling van die United Democratic Front (UDF) op 20 Augustus 1983 praat.

Die skepping van die UDF was dalk grootliks onbeplan, maar vir die ANC was dit sy grootste meevaller. Die UDF het Inkatha (wat nie genooi is nie) as die belangrikste binnelandse opposisiebeweging in die skaduwee gestel, het feitlik al die volgelinge van die SB-beweging in die bruin en Indiër-gemeenskappe geabsorbeer en het die Vryheidsmanifes, wat teen die laat 1970’s feitlik vergete geraak het, midde-in die politieke debat geplaas.

By die herdenking van die totstandkoming van die UDF, waar Zille ’n toespraak wou hou, is sy luidkeels uitgejou.  Die ANC ondersteuners het haar teenwoordigheid as ongewens beskou daar sy nie by die stigting betrokke was en dus ook nie by die herdenking behoort nie.  Zille se uiterste pogings om swart steun vir die DA te werf. hou kennelik nie tred met die swart ras se ingebore rassisme nie, ten spyte daarvan dat sy haarself verlaag tot dreunsang en toi-toi en hande hou en op nipper na, bostuklose kleding.  Onbewus van, of in ontkenning van sekere lewenswaarhede gemeet aan feite en gebeurlikhede vanuit die geskiedenis, is Helen Zille en die DA en almal wat soos hulle glo, gedoem om verteer te word deur  die gevolge van hulle optrede.

As stigterslid van die UDF was Alan Boesak ook by die Mitchellsplain herdenking van die stigting van die UDF, 28 jaar gelede. By sy onderskeiding as NG Sendingkerk predikant, redenaar en aktivisstatus, het hy intussen ook die status van Krimineel verwerf en daarvoor diens gedoen in die gevangenis.   Skaamteloos gebruik hy egter die platform om sy steun agter Tutu se Welvaartbelastingskema vir slegs blankes in te gooi. Wit mense, sê Boesak, trek steeds voordeel uit die gesamentlike bevoorregting uit al drie fases van Suid-Afrika se geskiedenis; Slawerny, kolonialisme en apartheid. Daar is egter géén van dié aktivistiese retoriek sonder substansie wat sy nuutverworwe status as krimineel sal wegneem nie, al redeneer of preek hy wat ook al! Al wat hy daardeur bereik is om die onvermoë vir selfhandhawing en selfbeskikking te bevestig.

Sy stelling dat:  “Ons kan nie wag totdat die rykes uiteindelik besluit hoeveel krummels ons van hul tafels mag kry nie”, plaas hom in Malema se geselskap en onderskei hom niks van die swart ras se grypsug en mentaliteit nie.
