SACP first deputy general secretary Jeremy Cronin said although there would be a discussion about going it alone, the discussion would not win the day
The SACP is not going to contest elections against the ANC or partner with the governing party any time soon. These were the firm words from the party leaders yesterday at the start of their special national congress at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus.
SACP first deputy general secretary Jeremy Cronin said although there would be a discussion about going it alone, the discussion would not win the day. "Our current strategy is to build the alliance [with the ANC]. It will come up [the debate on contesting elections]. We don't think it will come up strong," he said.
Cronin said the time was not right for the SACP to fight elections.
The SACP was concerned that the debate on contesting for state power happened in instances where the party was fighting with the ANC. Members of the SACP and the ANC fought each other in Mpumalanga - where calls are rife that the party must contest for state power - recently during a public lecture.
SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande said last night that, in most cases, those who want the party to contest elections want to "liquidate it". The congress would also give input into the ANC's second phase of radical economic transformation, which Cronin said lacked substance.
He said the second phase of transforming society needed to focus on the role of the state, which had to be disciplined. This, he said, included rooting corruption out of the government and the use of state institutions such as the Competition Commission to deal with abuses by big business.
